Connecting Own Device Data

Overview

The Weather BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) feature allows customers who use their weather stations in projects to switch between WeatherStack data and the Own Device data.

This feature is available only for those customers who have the necessary permissions.

Prerequisites

For a project to have the Weather BYOD feature, it needs to :

  1. Have a personal weather station setup (Own Device) and connected to Ambient Weather Network (AWN) and PWS Weather.

  2. Have the appropriate permissions listed in the permissions plugin in the dashboard.

Step 1: Adding your Device to Ambient Weather Network

After creating your account in AWN, we need to connect your device.

  1. Go to the Devices tab

  1. Click on the plus (+) icon to connect a new device.

  2. Provide your device’s MAC address, then click Next.

  3. You should have your device created like so:

Step 2: Connect PWS to Ambient Weather Network

Now that your device is connected to AWN, you need to set it to send data to PWS.

  1. After registering or connecting to PWS go to Manage Stations.

  1. Go to the stations tab, then click on “Add a station

  1. You will be prompted to enter some information about your weather station. Give it a name and position. Then, for hardware, write your station model number, and for software use AmbientWeather.net, then click SAVE STATION

  2. Now that your weather station is created, you need to connect it to AWN. Go to the newly created station and click on Edit.

You should see your api key. Copy it, as it would be needed in the next step.

  1. Go back to AWN dashboard and your device, then to its PWS tab. Add your PWS station name and api key that you got in the previous step, then click Connect.

When PWS is connected to your device, it should take from 1-7 days to become fully active.

Step 3: Activating your PWS Contributor plan

Now you need to activate your PWS station to be used with Xweather, which is the service we use to fetch weather data in Evercam.

  1. Go to https://signup.xweather.com/pws-contributor and connect using your PWS credentials.

  2. Next, you will be prompted to create a new XWeather account.

  3. Once that is done, go to your XWeather app https://account.xweather.com/data/apps, and you will be given a client ID and SECRET. Copy those, we will need them next in the Evercam dashboard.

Connecting your station to Evercam Dashboard

  1. Go to your project > project settings > weather tab.

Only the Company Admin can do this.

Click on Connect on the XWeather card. A new dialog will open where you can add your PWS weather station name alongside your XWeather id and secret that we got from Step 3.

If everything goes well, you should now have a weather report using your weather station data, and also the ability to change the weather provider in the camera weather tool.
